Spiritual Wellness: Nurturing Your Inner Self for a Fulfilling Life

Spiritual wellness is an area of wellness and self-care that I value highly. Having grown up in the church, going to seminary, becoming ordained, working in a church and now having left the church, I have a complicated relationship with religion.

However, spirituality, the knowledge that there is something bigger and greater than myself that is holding me in love, has been ever present. Spirituality doesn’t necessarily come easy. I am distracted and overwhelmed with my day to day tasks, so anything “spiritual” usually takes a back seat.

That was until I read The Practice of the Presence of God by Brother Lawrence. In the short book, Brother Lawrence describes the very secular task of washing dishes at the monastery. It was in this seemingly mundane task that he discovered that everything was in fact sacred. In this book he says, “Lord of all pots and pans and things… Make me a saint by cooking meals and washing up the plates”.  There is no separation between sacred and secular. I decided that my everyday life is in fact sacred.

However, spiritual wellness does need to be fostered and cultivated. Nurturing our spiritual wellness is crucial for leading a balanced, meaningful, and fulfilling life. In this comprehensive guide, we’ll explore the concept of spiritual wellness, its impact on our overall well-being, and practical tips to enhance your spiritual health.

What is Spiritual Wellness?

Let’s start with a definition. What is spiritual wellness? First, it is important to know that spiritual wellness is not relegated to religious beliefs, practices or attendance at church services. Rather, spirituality comprises meaning, purpose, and connection with all things. It includes understanding ourselves, others, our world, our participation in life, and a relationship with something greater than ourselves.

This can involve certain truths, beliefs and practices, but they do not necessarily need to be tied to an institution or religious tradition.

Spiritual wellness involves:

1. Cultivating a sense of purpose and meaning in life

2. Developing personal values, ethics, and beliefs

3. Fostering connections with others and the world around us

4. Practicing self-reflection and inner growth

5. Seeking harmony between our inner selves and the external world

Remember spiritual wellness does not require attachment to a specific religious tradition. While religious practices can absolutely contribute to your spiritual well-being, many people find spirituality through nature, meditation, art, service, music, or personal ideology.

When I first started a gratitude journal I had trouble thinking of three things I was thankful for but within a few weeks I had pages. The more you pay attention to the things we are grateful for the more gratitude you will experience. I love The Gratitude Journal. It encourages you to take a few minutes in the morning and in the evening.

Marianne Williamson says, “Forgiveness sets us free. “Unforgiveness is like drinking poison and waiting for the other person to die.” Are there grievances you are holding on to? Wrongs that have plagued your consciousness? People who are unforgiven? There is no time like the present to let them go. Remember forgiveness does not mean doesn’t mean condoning harmful behavior or remaining in toxic relationships but rather it is freeing yourself from the burden of resentment and anger.
